Clapo-Ktus: Great Shawl, Funny Name

Have you seen Clapo-Ktus, a merger of the ingenious and ubiquitous Clapotis and the equally clever and often riffed-upon Baktus? Borrowing the lacy dropped stitches of Clapotis and placing them in the side to side construction of Baktus, Clapo-Ktus yields a luxuriously-sized, elegant, simple shawl with just one skein of Handmaiden Sea Silk. Cathy knit up our shop sample in Moss in just a few...

The Simplest Cowl

Rowan’s newest yarn, Kidsilk Haze Trio, takes three strands of their iconic Kidsilk Haze and spins them together into one of the loftiest, softest bulky yarns you will ever see. The colorways are subtly marled creating a play of light and dark in its fuzzy, silken loveliness. We wanted to create a pattern–perhaps pattern is too grandiose a word–to highlight this amazing yarn while keeping it simple. What’s simpler than a cowl, knit in the round from a single skein of yarn? The Simplest Cowl Yarn: 1 skein Kidsilk Haze Trio Needles: US 10.5 (or larger for a looser cowl) Sizes: Approximately 11”x30” Cast on 100 stitches.  Join to work in the round, taking care not to twist. Knit until approximately 2 yards of yarn remain. Bind off and weave in ends. We weren’t kidding when we said...

A Bounty of Beauty

We have had new yarn just flooding in lately. Last week we got our latest shipment of Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light and Vintage. This shipment contained several new colorways and we now have over 20 colors in Vintage! Today we got our first yarn from The Periwinkle Sheep in upstate New York. The dyer visited our shop last month and we couldn’t resist her beautiful colors. We now have her 80/10/10 Merino/Cashmere/Nylon blend called Sock Dream. It is squishy and delicious. This will make decadent socks, smooshy scarves and shawls or a luxurious...

Sample Sale

Have you ever fancied those lovely knitted samples hanging in the store? Now’s your chance to take one home. On June 30 we’ll be holding our second annual sample sale in conjunction with the big Greenwood car show. While antiques and hot rods take over the street, we’ll be out on the sidewalk selling children’s wear, accessories and adult sweaters made from discontinued yarns. Once again we’ll have dozens of projects for sale (although remember, most of our sweaters are sized for petite women or teenagers.) The prices will be very competitive, often less than the cost of the yarn. Greenwood Avenue will be blocked off for the show, so don’t forget to drive here via 83rd Street North and park in the lot behind our...

Seattle Bag Fees

On July 1, Seattle’s new bag ordinance will go into effect, changing the way retailers do business. Like every other store, we will be prohibited from giving out thin plastic bags and we must charge 5 cents for large paper bags. The good news is that we anticipated the change months ago and switched to thicker plastic bags that are considered reusable and are legal to give out. These bags are big enough for most purchases. And we know that many of you already bring your own bags to shop with. We hope you’ll continue to do so. However, for those extra-large purchases (you know, the ones that you sneak into the house and hide from your significant other) we may occasionally have to charge you the nickel for a big paper carrier. We hope you understand that we’re just complying with the law, and that the end goal is keep the environment a little more...
