Students will be given a wool felt zippered change purse which they will decorate any way they wish with unspun wool. It’s great fun and needs no previous experience with felting. The two-hour class includes the purse, felting needles, a foam pad to work on and fiber. It costs...

Did you know that we now offer our Continuing Knitting class on Sunday mornings at 10 a.m.? This is a great class for newer knitters or anyone who wants to branch out and broaden their knitting horizons. With the help of knowledgeable instructor Hannah Ingalls, you’ll pick out a project and then work on at your own pace. Everyone in the class is working on something different, so you have the opportunity to compare ideas and learn new techniques. The next session of the six-week class starts Sunday, June 3.

Thank you, everyone who participated in the 2012 LYS Tour! It was great meeting so many of you from near and far. Congratulations to those who won our daily door prizes of bags, yarn and notions donated by our sponsor companies. Our featured tour patterns were very popular and are still available for free at the store. The Slouchy Hat: Simple, Striped or Spicy pattern has three variations. It was knit in The Fibre Company’s Acadia, a delicious, slubby mix of merino, baby alpaca and silk. There’s already a beautiful one in greens on Ravlery. The CCCCC scarf is a crocheted, convertible, chevron cowl in Rowan’s subtly variegated Colourspun...

Crews will be working in our block as part of an 18-month project to rebuild 85th Street and parts of Greenwood Avenue and improve sidewalk accessibility. Street parking will be limited, but there still will be plenty of space in our lot behind the store. The lot is accessed from 83rd Street.

Our spring/summer stitch-along kicks off May 5, and for the first time we’ll be offering a choice of four different projects, including a crocheted vest. The projects are all from Classic Elite’s new Locomotive booklet. The grand prize for this knitalong is a gift basket of yarn and accessories from Classic Elite. The patterns are: Comet, a knitted sweater with lots of ease created by pleats that fall from a high waist; Double Decker, a knitted lace scarf with picot edging; Doodlebug, a knitted sleeveless shell that incorporates a chevron lace pattern; and Couchette, a crocheted tunic vest that can be worn open or tied with a drawstring at the waist. All four are made in a new (for us) yarn, Soft Linen. The DK-weight linen/wool/alpaca blend is perfect for transitional seasons. It’s soft and lightweight, yet with a crisp body. The winner will be chosen at the wrapup party from among those who have completed one of the garments. The garment must be knitted in Soft Linen to be eligible for the grand prize, but everyone is invited to participate in the event with any DK yarn to compete for other prizes and join in our parties and help sessions. The May 5 party is from 4 to 6 p.m. It features door prizes and advice on picking yarn and starting the...
Read MoreFinal (Word on) Jeopardy
More than 30 knitters and friends were on hand last Tuesday at the Pig ‘n’ Whistle Pub to watch as our owner, Mary Harris, became a Jeopardy champion. A Seattle Times photographer was on hand to witness the evening, which also featured a trivia contest about Mary, prizes and cake. (Mary lost the following evening, but she thanks everyone who celebrated with her). The biggest question everyone had was, “What sweater was she wearing?” It was Vonica by Chicknits. It was our shop knitalong pattern last fall.
